I went to my first White Castle yesterday while driving from Nashville back to Atlanta. To those unfamiliar, White Castle is the Northern-based fast food restaurant known for its mini sliders (little square burgers). Like many fast food places, it has it’s staunch followers who believe it to be the best version of a fast food place selling little sliders, as opposed to the South’s answer, Krystal. As much as I hate to be a traitor to my people, I have to side with the yanks on this one.
White Castle was founded in 1921, making it the oldest known fast food burger chain in the US. I had never been because we don’t have any in Georgia (it’s too south, I think I went to the most southern one that exists and it is about 3 hours north) and because quite frankly fast food sucks for vegetarians. I mean it sucks in general because it’s terrible for you (esp. deterring considering the recent study that found that shitty food is one of the leading causes of death – even worse for you than smoking!). But honestly, after decades of no options outside of fries, I was downright excited to learn that White Castle has veggie sliders and knew I had to go. Not only one kind either, but two! The Impossible burger and a veggie patty. I ordered both and promptly hustled to my car for a proper road-trip style assessment.
Below are some pics of the beauts. The veggie burger was ok, it kind of reminded my of a Dr. Praegers California veggie burger, I tend to like vegetable patties that have a little more texture. I wish I would have put a sauce on it. For the Impossible burger I chose to add jalapeño cheddar and a pickle which was the best decision ever as this slider was downright delicious. I brought some home for Nick and he agreed that they are dangerously yummy, cheap, and easy. It may be a good thing that we don’t have any close by as they would be the too-convenient drunken late-night go to…
I have been so excited to see the increase of veg food everywhere from the frozen food section in grocery stores to larger sections on menu’s and now to fast food! Other countries have had veg burgers in their fast food places for a long time, it’s been quite overdue for the US but I think it’s only a matter of time before there will be complete veg sections on every fast food menu, things are changing every day – apparently White Castle has an even newer one they just premiered, a BBQ Impossible burger – I gotta get myself back up to Murfeesboro, Tennessee!
